Talk to your healthcare provider before starting HEMLIBRA

Here are some important topics to review with your healthcare provider:

• There may be serious side effects of HEMLIBRA when using a bypassing agent; talk to your healthcare provider about:
  • when to use a bypassing agent, the dose, and schedule
  • serious side effects when used with aPCC (FEIBA®)
  • signs and symptoms of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) and blood clots
• Create a plan with your healthcare provider for when and how to treat a bleed.
• HEMLIBRA cannot be used to treat a bleed. Discuss what product you should use.
• Some lab tests that measure how well your blood is clotting may be impacted by HEMLIBRA, resulting in a false reading. Ask what information you should share with a healthcare provider prior to a medical procedure (eg, surgery, dental cleaning).
• Your healthcare provider will train you on how to inject HEMLIBRA, and help you understand what supplies you will need.
• Get suggestions or tips on how to stick with your new treatment regimen.

Planning for emergencies

Being ready for an emergency situation is important. Consider updating your emergency medical information and knowing what to do if a trip to A&E is necessary.

• Always carry your patient card that was provided by your healthcare provider when you started HEMLIBRA. If you would like this information in a digital format, please ask your Haemophilia Treatment Centre about , your digital medication passport.
• Many phones have a “health” or “medical ID” function that allows important information to be stored and accessed in an emergency without a password.
• You may also want to talk to your healthcare provider about a travel letter. This document provides information about your condition, medications taken, and supplies you need to carry. While medicines are sometimes prescribed for some reasons not listed in the Medication Guide, do not use HEMLIBRA for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give HEMLIBRA to other people, even if they have the same symptoms that you have. It may harm them. You can ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider for more information about HEMLIBRA.
